MTR South Island Line - Opening on 28/12/16

Construction of the MTR's South Island Line (East) is on schedule for completion in 2015. The new 7km line will cut travel time between Admiralty and Ap Lei Chau to 10 minutes, at an estimated production cost of HK$10 billion.

Starting in Admiralty, where station expansion is underway underneath Queensway, the South Island Line will stop at Ocean Park, Wong Chuk Hang, Lei Tung and South Horizons.

A Happy Valley station between Admiralty and Ocean Park has been discussed.

The West Island Line, which extends the Island Line through Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong University and on to Kennedy Town, will be completed in 2014.

Plans show the South Island Line and the West Island Line connecting somewhere in the future, but no decisive date has been given.

Several complaints have been directed at the South Island Line regarding the environment but, for the most part, residents in these areas seem satisfied with construction arrangements.

There is no doubt the South Island Line will ease commutes for people living in Ap Lei Chau -- the worlds 3rd most densely populated island -- but will the new line increase tourism to the Aberdeen area?

Does anyone else wonder what will happen with all the bus routes that service Ap Lei Chau? Will prices be forced down, or frequencies shaved?

Looking at that map, wouldn't it make sense to make a Circle Line using the West Island Line, South Island Line (West and East sections) and the Island line section between Sheung Wan and Admiralty? Island line trains to Chai Wan could share the line (in other subway systems around the world more than one train uses a line), as could trains to South Horizons.

Any plans to extend the line from Chai Wan to Stanley?

Having a stop in Happy Valley / Racecourse makes sense.

there is no plans for happy valley station anymore ( scrapped due to low density demographic population and the hkjc refuses to subside part of the cost as well ), see the official mtr site

I can't imagine the geography would allow that.

For the West Island Line, I think the plan is to make it more of a light rail, so probably smaller trains than on the Island Line.

West Island Line (WIL) is the extension of the Island Line with only 3 stations.

A South Island Line West Section (short SIL-W) has been discussed, see the green dotted line in the diagram by imparanoic.

Never heard of any plan for a MTR line on the eastern side of HK island.

Can't imagine population density would require the need for a line from Chai Wan to Stanley as well...

From the MTR website, it will be a 'medium-capacity' line, and I heard or read somewhere that they would be 'driverless' trains...not sure about that tho...

The WIL that bookblogger mentioned is just an extension, not a new line. The SIL-E will be medium capacity, with driverless trains.

I have a sudden urge to hop into Transport Tycoon Deluxe & start building mag-levs across huge tracts of countrysides.

    vmlinuz and dot.zen like this.
