Or you can live right next to Taikoo Place and be able to walk to work in 1 minute. Take your dog up the hiking trails 2 blocks away up Mt. Parker and at night take your dog to the unofficial off leash areas at the ends of Quarry Bay Park.

if you are on a budget, i would suggest forgetting Discovery Bay.
    1) what you save in accomodation costs will be made up for in ferry costs
    2) it will take over an hour to get to work
    3) if you are a single guy, you will probably want to have more of a social life, discovery bay is mostly made up of families.

    i would forget north point.
    1) you are right in the middle of the city.
    2) not very many nice places to walk your dog.
    3) most parks in hong kong do not allow dogs, country parks are the exception.

happy valley would probably be out of your price range as would pok fu lam.

park island would be cheaper than discovery bay, but still not an ideal choice if you are working in quarry bay.

the obvious choice, seems to be tseung kwan o (hang hau village type place) or clearwater bay/sai kung.

you can get 700', two bed, 1 bath (usually), possibly garden (ground floor), balcony (1st & 2nd floor) or rooftop (2nd floor). you would most likely get a car park provided, if you ended up wanting a car. you are a short-ish taxi ride from MTR, but there are also buses and minibuses. you could go to HANG HAU MTR, rather than CHOI HUNG to cut down on your travel time. in sai kung, there is quite a community feel (so it would be my first recommendation), clearwater bay is a little more remote, in that there is no "town centre" although there is a decent supermarket.

sai kung has loads of vets/pet shops, so you'd never be too far from medical care for your pooch.

you are on the doorstep of the country parks, so walking your dog would be a pleasure, not a chore.

it would also be in your price range. 700' going from $6k-13k depending on location & condition.

    good luck with your move.
ps. for quarantine, it would depend on where in kowloon the quarantine is located. to get from quarry bay to pok fu lam by public transport could take 45 minutes or more.

my word, that is some really useful information there. Thank you so much mytimeoff, smelly & carang! This will be really helpful to me

From what all of you have described, Sai Kung & Clear Water Bay seem to be an excellent choice for me to stay with decent travel time and a nice, relaxed lifestyle.

@ carang & mytimeoff, you're right when you said I'd like a slightly more social life. I don't know anyone in HK yet, but I'm hoping to make a few pals such as yourselves that I can socialise with. Staying in Sai Kung would be a better choice in that case, but I'll have to decide that based on what I find available within my budget.

As far as the two government quarantine kennels, here are the addresses for each:

    Hong Kong Animal Management Centre
At: 688 Victoria Road, Pokfulam, Hong Kong

    Kowloon Animal Management Centre
At: 102 Sung Wong Toi Road, Tokawawan, Kowloon

If I'm staying in Sai Kung or Clear Water Bay, which management centre should I put my dog in?

Remind me to take you guys out for a drink when I get there

It will defintely have to be the Kowloon one.
Pokulam is on the south side of Hong Kong Island.

If you really choose to be in Saikung/clearwater bay, we can arrange for walks together with our goldies!!!

    Good Luck!

definitely go for the kowloon one.

if you ever want to walk dogs with someone, you could give my hubby a call. we board dogs at our house, so it seems like he's always out walking dogs.

Thanks, both of you. The Kowloon one it is then

I'll keep you both posted on my decision - might need your help later on to answer any other questions that come up later

Hopefully, I'll see you both in HK soon!
