Why should I trust you? I walk that way regularly. Until a few months ago I used to walk from Wanchai past Pacific Place to LKF almost daily. I know how long it took me. From the Luk Kwok Centre to LKF would be about 21-24 minutes without breaking a sweat (in winter). I do a lot of hiking and I know that on good flat paths I walk at between 6 and 7.5km/h depending on how hard I push. 15 minutes for the 1.7km from Star Street to LKF is well within that range.

    [QUOTE=Retailjunkie;472199]Hi, Rob,

Exactly what do you mean by a 'tennis club'?
    QUOTE]

    Hi RJ

I was looking at maybe the Hong Kong Tennis Club in Happy Valley or something similar but until I visit I have no conception of travel logistics around that north part of the island. As I say this secondment has been sprung upon me.

I want to be in some sort of tennis league rather than a single court at an apartment block

Is travel from Happy Valley to Pacific Place reasonably ok timewise?

Also do you think a budget of 1800 gbp / month will be ok for a decent one bed place?

    Cheers
    Rob

    Hi Carang
    Thanks for the comments
    In reply to your question......
My budget is around 22k hkd per month for a one bedder
Is that sufficient do you think ?
Other requirements? well I lead a great social life in London - tennis, rugby and I have a great circle of friends so I will be starting my life in HK from scratch effectively !

Your accommodation budget is plenty, although the apartment may be smaller than you are used to. But $22K would get you 700 sq.ft (probably with 2 bedrooms - one bedroom apartments aren't so common) in most areas of HK.

Basically living anywhere between Mid-levels/Kennedy Town and Tin Hau is going to be reasonably convenient for work in Central and socialising. Happy Valley might well be a good choice with sports facilities around. The standard advice is to get your company to pay for a serviced apartment or hotel for up to a month when you arrive so that you can find your way around and get a feel for the different areas before committing to an apartment.

It sounds like you may want to join some sort of club. I'm not familiar with the clubs available on the island, but I know a lawyer friend of mine goes to one in Wan Chai which does rowing and other sports - to be honest, pretty much everywhere in HKI is going to be accessible from anywhere else, it's just not that small! If you are a member of any clubs in the UK, you might want to look into reciprocal arrangements before you leave and find out where they are ......

I do believe apple&dog's service as a dogwalker was heavily criticised by a fellow forum member in the thread:

    BEWARE WHEN HIRING PET SITTERS/WALKERS!

Rob, you need to get your work to pay for some sort of (private) club membership or if you're a good tennis player you might be able to get a sporting membership at one of the clubs. Sporting membership is more or less free, I think you pay a small upfront fee and then the monthly fees but no debenture to get in. You are also required to actually play the sport you got in for. Some people forget this.

Not many clubs offer sporting memberships but you could check around. How good are you? I play Premier A here and the competition is not bad. Not as good as back home but at least I'm not being thrashed around the court by 15 year olds trying to make it onto the circuit anymore

Given the location you want to live I'd check out the HK Cricket Club and the Football Club. Both have teams in the leagues here though I know the Football club doesn't give sporting membership to tennis players. There aren't many bonafide tennis clubs but it's kind of better the way it works here as you get a broader mix of people and in the off seasons you can play another sport if you want to.

Once you've told me how good you are I can ask around for the right club for you.

i see the infamous "red blobber" is back... this time saying, 'you didn't answer the question'

actually i DID answer the question, but without further information from the OP, it was impossible to answer it exactly. besides, every one likes living in different places....
