    re: racism

Hk is a voluntary signatory to all international Human Rights conventions, which make discrimination, at least in terms of employment, illegal. Hong Kong subscribes to common law, and the ICCPR is entrenched in the HK Bill of Rights.

HK, like all first-world regions, is subject to these international standards.

By the way, the Yumla management would have a heart attack if they heard that you were mentioning them in the same sentence as volar, dragon japseye, or hei hei. They are not the least bit cliquety. Take it from a scruffy eurasian regular. No cheesy RnB. No dress code. They do get packed though, so profiling at the door may exist, but only to make sure the regular moneyspinners are propping up the bar!

You must've pissed da management off somehow. Yumla only refuses entry to the under age (24 is da limit I think) or people who have pissed off da staff or pissed off some regular customer.

Yum really looks after its usual crowd (looks after them -a-lot-) ...which is one reason why its so cool fun down there. No-one gets barred for no reason. Not 9-10 times at least Bad luck!!

Which are not enforceable in any way.

Hong Kong as far as I know has some lame laws about age and sex discrimination, not race.

And even those are totally irrelevant to business - anyone can choose to do business with anyone they want for pretty much any reason or none at all. It is never (with a very few regulated exceptions) compulsory for a business to supply a service to anyone who demands it.

Racism is over-hyped. The only colour that matters is the colour of money. It's all about classism. Filipinos get a rough time here because they have low spending power, and sometimes Westerners get better treatement because we are perceived to be big spenders. As a small buisiness owner, I frequently allow my European/American clients to pay 30 or 60 days after delivery. But if that client is African, Arab or South Asian etc I insist that they pay in advance before I ship out the stock. Does that make me a racist?

May be ... I don't know, but it does make you a bad (if not dumb) businessman if you're not checking their credit and basing your decision on race factors ...

Topic for another thread / discussion ...
