If the Beijng government refuses to allow casino gambling in Hong Kong, then there isn't anything we can do or say, but if it was a Hong Kong decision, then it is another matter.

Macau's gambling revenue exceeds Las Vegas' by far. I bet 90% of that revenue is "drained" from Hong Kong economy and yet Macau is the sole beneficiary.

Are the Venetian, the Wynn, the MGM Grand Hotel & Casinos really smokey opium dens?

No they are not and there are differences between the MGM, Wynn and Venetian in terms of visitors/clientele.

They are certainly places where I do not enjoy much going (I am no gambler) and that of course attracts the rotten apple and all that comes with it, but the Venitian also has a large shopping area and dining places. City of Dreams and Venitian both have have permanent shows (Cirque du Soleil and House of Dancing waters) and the Venetian has a a huge multipurpose room that organizes concerts, sports demo....

DeletedUser is always very quick to paint everything related to Macau and/or HK with a negative brush.

But seriously, is this not covered in Hong Kong's guaranteed autonomy?

They do allow smoking inside though, at least at the Venetian. And nobody seemed to care if someone smokes in the non-smoking areas; not that they are of much use in an open room anyway.

Macau is such a smaller city than Hong Kong; won't you think casinos will impact the economy, e.g. inflation, in Macau much more significantly than they would in Hong Kong?

I don't know about the overall implications, but it would be good for opportunities amongst the poorer citizens of HK. In macau, relatively uneducated people who would otherwise have been earning about 6k a month can now earn 18k quite easily working in a casino.

Of course, someone still has to do the other jobs, so maybe this is where inflation comes in, as lower salaries no longer attract staff, pushing prices up all round. Not that I'm an economist or anything
