Why has this low budget series about a man who flies through space and time with 'companions' and sometimes a metal dog along with a screw driver trying to out wit his enemies to save the less fortunate lasted so long.

I loved the Daleks but wondered how they managed to invsde whole planets given that it was so easy to disable them.
