Anywhere small bars that would welcome a new DJ?

    Hi All,

I'm from the UK and will be moving to HK in January, I'll be moving over alone to start work, and want to find a good way to meet people! I am an amateur DJ who plays mostly electronic music of various degrees, and thought it could be a good way to meet people to play in small bars etc... does anyone have any experience of this, think it will/won't work etc etc!

    Any suggestions welcomed!

    Thanks

    Will

Are you on a work visa? Technically you can't get a sideline job without permission from your employer and immd. The big clubs won't risk their license for an amateur but if you have your own equipment you could always do house parties.

    Hi,

I will have a work visa, however I was thinking more as an unpaid kind of thing, just a way to meet people and get out than as a source of income!

Even for unpaid or voluntary work, you still need a visa in HK.

Depends what kind of stuff you play. There are different promoters for different genres. Eg. Push and another that I forgot the name of for house and techno, Heavy and Magnetic Soul for dnb and dubstep, Sessions and XXX for a mix of bass genres, The Getup for funk / soul and a bit of techno, Truesoul for reggae / dancehall. There are a number of others I don't really know about.

Certain ones are more likely to give you a shot than others. Certain genres are pretty saturated in HK now though, so it all depends what you do I guess.
