If you like a bit of local folklore and don't mind staying up all night, the Yau Ma Tei fruit market is quite a sight to behold. Action starts at around 3am, between 4 and 6 it's the vegetarian's equivalent of tsukiji

Is the fruit market next to the theatre? Ive been there during the day and it didn't seem all that special.

During the day only a few retail shops are open. At night pretty much all of the fruit eaten in HK is sold there during 2 hours. Was extremely lively and I found it very interesting to observe.

Are there things open after midnight in MongKok? Or is it a veritable no man's land.

Bars, restaurants, hotels, snack&desert shops, a few fruit shops, dens of ill repute and a few mahjong parlours.

No matter, there will be still quite a number of people walking about.

For early morning dim sum, Sun Hing Restaurant in Kennedy Town opens its doors at 3am.
