I thought an honorary Oscar was usually given to someone elderly who was passed over a number of times but "really deserved one", kind of thing, rather than people who never had a chance of getting one the usual way.
Personal opinions about him aside - I think most will agree the man deserves the recognition for his accomplishments as an actor. But i'll stop there.
It's long overdue.
