New Bond: Is nothing sacred ?

Yep, just heard the news that the 25th 007 installment will be black and female ( Lashana Lynch) too. I almost spat my cuppa out on discovering the announcement from Hollywood, that this is what they're going to do. This really is a bit of shock, for 50 years James Bond's ID number has been synonymous as his license to kill logo/moto etc for what is one of the movie worlds most recognizable legacy spy characters, as per Ian Flemmings original books.

OK I get it, but let us be honest here, there is nothing empowering about taking something that has always been a bit of a male fantasy and then tipping it on its head like this and turning it into a feminist, PC, SJW piece of pop cultural propaganda for a questionable audience.

I was totally fine when they were toying with the idea of having, Idris Elba, I thought, yeah he'll be alright, as it still would have been character gender correct for the 21st century world that we live in. All good..

I don't know, but I cant help think that this is going just a little too far, for this particular franchise. It's all getting a bit silly now.

Take a deep breath. Can't be worse than the Timothy Dalton-era Bond.

I didn't mind Timothy Dalton in his first foray as Bond, in The Living Daylights, but yes, License To Kill, really was a bit shiz, my least favourite Bond film.

Bond is hardly timeless. Some of the shit Connery's Bond pulled with his interactions with women are cringe-inducing today. Roger Moore's hand-to-hand combat skills are laughable and some action sequences border on slapstick. In a mild defense to Dalton-era Bond, it was the end of the cold war and the writers didn't quite know what to do with the character - chasing a drug lord?!

I think the strong female characters introduced during the Craig-era Bond have improved the franchise. Judy Densch is well, Judy Dench - always a powerhouse on screen and as M, credible in dealing with a fast-changing world order. And Naomie Harris's Moneypenny is much more than sad, lovestruck secretary. I was disappointed her Spectre role was so small after a bravura introduction in Skyfall.

Let's let this play out. It might be shit. Or it might give the franchise a much needed jolt after the momentum-killing Spectre.

Well we had Kevin Costner playing Robin Hood with an American accent so no, nothing is sacred.

I don't like it.The last few with Daniel Craig have been brilliant.

Russell Crowe as Javier in Les Miserables. Evidently no one told him it was a musical.

Also, Brosnan's Bond drove a BMW. A BMW FFS!!

I'll probably go and see it and will try to keep an open mind. Just hoping the writers/directors etc don't trash it the way Dr. Who was rendered unwatchable by the PC Police: https://www.oneangrygamer.net/2018/1...-rating/73549/

Maybe it's time we stopped watching the 25th reboot of the same franchise.

Dr Who seemed to be re-target for 12 year olds with lots of far too obvious social messaging about doing your homework, playing nice, equality. It had all of those elements in bucket loads before just as part of the story not the story. The new Doctor was fine but the writers treating it as a kids show rather than a whole family show made it a painful watch at times.
