Sleazy antics finally catch up with Fenwick's

Fenwick the Dock, one of the city's most notorious late-night discos, will close tomorrow morning, just as the biggest drinking weekend of the year gets under way.

Police opposed a renewal of the disco's licence with the Liquor Licensing Board due to "ongoing incidents". Last drinks will be called sometime early tomorrow morning, meaning the disco will not profit from the thirsty Rugby Sevens crowd.

I don't think they can cover the rent and salaries of 50 staff without booze. That kind of overhead is not forgiving.

Isn't Traffik the new Fenwick? I understand that it is owned by the same people.

A friend of mine has a wierd theory about this closing down.
He says Fenwick owners have pulled off this stunt on their own, so that they could direct all the hookers and patrons on to Traffik to build it up. Apparently Traffik hasn't been doing well at all from the time it opened.
Offcourse it seems absurd to me, but, well its one of those conspiracy theories, which are, just theories...

Yes it is owned by the same people. It's a smallish bar on the third floor and a bit out of the way. Makes we wonder if the owners of Fenwick knew the licence would not be renewed...

This could have a serious knock-on effect on the Philippine economy...

Not just the Philippines. I haven't been in there for many years, but when going past, the overflow on the street outside seems to be as much Latina and gweipo as anything else these days. Last Saturday night when I went past at 1:30am (en route to a far more civilised place to watch the rugby) there were two young white women completely out of it, lying (rather immodestly given the short "boob tube" dresses that they were wearing) on the pavement at the foot of the steps. I guess they had been deposited there by the bouncers.
