The night scene depends only on you my friend...I spent some great night in the middle of nowhere in China or Mongoli, some fantastic parties in London or Bangkok, Some great evening in HK, Macau....

Now if you go out only to shag for free I guess you wont find it satisfactory anywhere in the world...

    1. Young but not poor.
    2. Thai, indonesian, etc - if you know your stuff, you dont need money.
    3. Interacting with locals does not require cantonese.
    4. Middle aged caucasian ladies might not be my style but I have nontheless outmost respect for them.
    5. "Cute asian tail that cost money" - if lady is interested in money, there is no interest in me, so what is the point hm?
    6. Reality check performed. Thanks for help.

And there is. I am surprised to find that no one has mentioned trying out a few local bars. After all we are in Hong Kong.

There are hundreds of local bars where you won't see an expat. Wanchai, Causeway Bay, North Point, TST, Mong Kok... the list goes on and on. And the prices are far more reasonable than the prices the LKF bars have to charge to pay their huge rent bills. It CAN be possible to get a round of beers at the bar and hand over a $100 or so.

Visits to these bars, I have found a very different culture, more laid back, no 'Rugger Bugger' types and people very friendly to see an expat venturing out of the usual circle.

A group of us recently ventured into a bar in Causeway Bay and we were very warmly received. The manager was plying us (somewhat strangely) with pitchers of whisky and water and a couple of local girls seemed very keen to chat and swap telephone numbers. This was a bit embarrasing as I was there with a group to celebrate my wife's birthday!

When we left the bar staff seemed very keen for us to return, which we did a couple of weeks ago and again we were made to feel very welcome.

I recently had a friend arrive in HK for a short stay. He had recently split up from a long term girlfriend and wanted to hit the town hard, drown his sorrows and meet a local girl. We went round a few local bars in Kowloon (ie not expat dominated LKF scene), had a great evening which ended up with us playing drinking games with the bar staff (more free booze) and he managed to meet a local girl, who he was initially quite smitten with and they have stayed in touch.

Of the 48 hours he was in Hong Kong, he only spent 2 of them in his hotel room! A waste of a booking in some ways.

I don't think his view of HK nightlife would mirror Chrome's.

Chrome, does that go some way towards answering your question?
Thanks for sharing that HKnewBI. I think the experiences which you have described sound fun but are a bit random and not so easy to run into. Its a little bit of a hit or miss process and I seem to have missed more than hit in the past. Its definately good to hear there is another side though. I do not give up so easily so who knows, maybe 1 day i will find those places which you speak of, no matter how utopian it might sound to some people on these boards.

    Apologies

Perhaps I was a little hasty in my put down. It was only meant to be a joke. Honestly!

Not quite as rough and tumble as Asiaxpat. I shall mind my Ps and Qs.

No utopia but no different from other western style bar scenes from LA to Sydney via Tokyo. Both my brothers spent their formative (20 - 30 years old) growing up in HK and had no problem, when single, going out and finding women for one night stands or long lasting relationships - as happens in any other city in the world I have been in.

In fact, I met my wife on a night out in Hong Kong. I wasn't living here at the time, I just came over for 3 weeks over the hand over back in 1997 and she was doing the same. 9th anniversary coming up (if only I could remember the exact date).

I ventured out for the first time the other night with 2 buddies, and the general feeling was that LKF was far too expensive for what was going on. We ended up in Wan Chai, which was a laugh, and the drinks were far more reasonably priced. It ended up being an awesome night, but we didn't make our way into Carnegies though - any good?

How about Soho? We're looking to head out for another nightout sometime this weekend, and were wondering where comparisons can closer be drawn; Wan Chai, or Lan Kwai Fong?

And apologies for the intrusion, Chrome.
