"Drop" near Soho plays good funky house beats. Not sure abou the crowd tho, just the usual LKF ones. What clubs in central play house or dance beats??
What do you mean by not sure about the crowd?
Not enough people wearing their pants below their arses and talking ghetto?
Hmm been there twice and was pretty much having fun dancing. Didnt mingle much so i said I am not sure what the crowd is like..
I think we shuld get togheter
Open a megainfrastructure get sum kick ass electro djs from spain italy or england lights sound system
organize 12 hour non stop events and mega events and shit like that and boost up hk clubbing scene to the max.
Hey! I totally agree with you two - Groovn and Chrome. I think Chrome's three "categories" of bar/club types is exactly correct! I am a 26 year old female who was born here in HK but raised in Canada. LKF is a great place to be seen but it's way over priced and just haven't found a bar/club I really like. As for Wai Chai; not a huge fan.
I enjoy hip-hop and read about the two clubs called Volar and Sugar in HK magazine. I was actually at the hip-hop club "Sugar" last night and it was a lot of young locals jammed packed. The music was great but there were too many people on the dance floor and couldn't even walk around the place. What really pissed me off was that many people weren't even dancing, they were just hanging out with their friends on the dance floor. I would definitely not pay $200 to be squashed again at that club.
I have also emailed Volar about checking out their club but they emailed me back saying fax them my business card. What they need to screen if I'm cool enough first? I know it's a members' only but is it actually worth it?
yay lets do that..get some funky beats pumping!...I basically like different typa dance music. Prefer something upbeats tho.
Just want to mention that my fav is still Chase the Sun by Planetfunk..i get hypnotised by that.
And yea I was in Sugar that night too. I actually paid $200 to get in for only 15 minutes because my friends couldnt stand it there and switched to Hei Hei (overrated too)...I am getting a bad impression on those popular clubs..Edge or Dragon I are even worse..well I tell you what, thats just a HK phenomenon, following something blindly just for the sake of being "cool" or "in"...
Yes, Volar... They check to see if you're cool enough before letting you in - really, no kidding. There's always a crowd hanging outside trying to get in. Even when they let you in, it's a HKD 350 cover charge for one drink if I remember right.
Smoky, tons of people - like Mong Kok during rush hour without the humidity and heat. The music was a little outdated the night I went... I thought Aqua in TST is pretty decent if you're looking for a good bar. I haven't been in HK for half a year now but I remember that there was a building in Jardine Bazaar that had tons of trendy bars (not for yuppies tho, more of a younger crowd) on the top floors... Forgot the building's name though.

I does sound reasonable but I don't think that's the main reason. It's just smart marketing,
- there's ALWAYS a large crowd hanging outside Volar. Even when it's NOT REALLY packed inside they don't let anyone in. I honestly don't know how it is now but it was like that 6 months ago.
- They want to maintain a certain exclusivity. Right or wrong it's the way they do things in HK apparently, look at Hei-hei. As of half a
year ago, peeps have just moved to another exclusive lounge and they've gotten lax with the rules.
- the more people is inside, the more drinks you'll serve and the more they can earn from the profit spread - I seriously don't think ANYONE should charge HKD 140 for 2 small glasses of Whiskey-cokes.
- I'm sure you're right that there is a maximum capacity for a space like Volar and it's written in their safety code but it's mainly marketing - look at the brand Bathing Ape in the last 2 years as a case study.
