Businesses outside of HK mess up their websites / services every now and then ...

Vanguard's website snafu -- perhaps an unforced error, a CTO says -- has no ETA for a fix but it led to CEO Tim Buckley reading the automated message script to desperate callers.

In another random sighting ... discovered that they still use "floppy disks" in Japan/Tokyo...

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has lost two floppy disks containing personal information on 38 people, the department announced on Dec. 27

The MPD said the floppy disks contained personal data on 38 people who had applied for public housing in Tokyo's Meguro Ward. The ward office had provided the personal information to the MPD to check if the applicants were affiliated with organized crime groups.

Talking of computer history, I just found this site and my first ever computer - a 380z complete with twin 8" floppy disk drives (separate box). I had the luxury of one at home and one at work.

When I started Computer Studies at school, we had a single 8" computer sitting gathering dust in the corner of the room, and a room full of BBC Micros. When I finished, the BBCs were still there, but there was another room full of RM Nimbus not-quite-IBM-compatible PCs next door...

Yes remember the Nimbus. A great 10 years working there. I was probably the only person working as a manager for a publicly listed company who was only known by his nickname. On the company phone list hundreds of normal names and "Groggy". I even received a written warning from HR addressed "Dear Groggy".
