Wordle can be a stern challenge so I would suggest
    - As few vowels as possible as they're easy to guess later
    - Packed with common consonants t, n, s, r....
    - Use the most common vowel
    - Use a common starting letter s, c, b...
    - Not a plural or ending in an s

Or do you just go to get the right vowels identified first?

I just pick a word with common letters such as "steam" but to be honest it doesn't matter because if you draw a blank it eliminates letters for the next rounds.

I start with MATES and then play PROUD as the second word, irrespective of what I get on the first one. Then I usually have enough for a reasonable guess and hone it down.

AUDIO and something starting with S depending on the results from AUDIO, hopefully with an E in there.

I try to go by the statistics, with particular reference to the approximately 2.5k solution words (of 12.5k accepted) [may not materially differ from OP’s souce].

Why? So as to avoid as much as possible close guesses and stress in what should be an easy game that you’re fundamentally playing against yourself. Not aiming to solve in the fewest guesses (not a machine) but hopefully most consistent.

{Sidenote: Am often amazed how quickly other people get to their solutions when it might look to me at least two other alternatives possible. Most recent one where I myself got the first of three possibilities as case in point.)

Depends on your strategy, trying to get it as fast as possible, avoid not getting it...

Here's an animation where an algorithm ranks different starting words depending on the approach it is using to solve it.

    I personally go with "ARISE"

That technique is often over used and makes things boring
