You can never have too many cats

Yes, depends on space. For a flat, two...IF they get along. Best was my ground floor on Peng Chau with a cat flap, let themselves in an out (and, of course, brought wildlife IN to have fun with).
For me, on the 7th floor, down to one cat (one cat died 2 years ago). I am gone usually about 12 hours per day, no way I can subject a dog to that, bad enough for the cat.
Friend of mine is one of those weird cat addicts. Started with one, has six now. In a HK 2BR flat. Absolute insanity. Don't see him that often but whenever I do see him he has one or two more.
I’d say very generally in an urban setting, double digits means you likely have a problem. Below that is no one’s business, although 2-4 is probably enough for most people.
In our household even the mention of a cat is too much. I'm mildly allergic, the wife is super allergic and the dog has a high prey drive.
The spca has been overloaded recently and called for help, especially foster families. Fostering is a great way to have cats but never be crazy.
I have three, husband says one too many, but if there's zero dogs in our life, gotta compromise somewhere. Two Hong Kong kitties enjoying their green grass, forest and freedom in one of the world's most luxurious countries. One an spca kitty, another lost on the streets of Tuen Mun, and one European mutt, who couldn't be more different (the HKers don't care for her).
I'd be happy to have more... In fact our neighbor cat comes over, too.
IF I were to retire to a single family house on a few acres, I would do the full-on crazy cat lady thing, rescuing a pile. In fact, the house I bought in the Tokyo suburbs was to be a partner to a cat rescue in Central Japan, long story. However, currently looking like retirement in Taiwan is more likely so definitely needs to be a limited number of cats.
