Fraid so - the odds of any 6 number combo coming out are the same

They are the same. Each number has an equal chance of being selected, ceteris paribus.

I recall been told about a lottery in Denmark, or somewhere nearby, in which the winning numbers were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. There were many winners, each thought their pick of numbers unique and were disappointed at not getting the whole caboodle.

Brilliant .. but mind numbing article ..

    http://plus.maths.org/issue29/featur...ndex-gifd.html

Whatever numbers you select, and whether or not you remain faithful to the same combination every draw, your chance of winning, and the average number of prizes, are not affected. The only "skill" is in selecting combinations that fewer other players use, leading to higher prizes - but we have little direct knowledge of other players' choices. If, by some miracle, this article were to be widely read and its contents splashed over the popular press, enough players might change their habits, and combinations that used to be unpopular (hence potentially more profitable) could become chosen more frequently. If you must enter the Lottery, there is much to be said for making a completely random selection of numbers.

Aye, the maths is - you have 1 in 49 chances of getting one as the first number, one in 48 of getting 2 as the second number, 1 in 47 for 3 etc. Equals odds of one in 10,068,347,520 of 1-6 coming out in that order. Then as the numbers can come out in any order for the lotto (i.e. could be 6,1,3,2,4,5 for example) you divide by the number of possible combinations of six numbers (720) to give you 1 in 14mn or so.

Same principle for working out the odds of 49,48,47,46,45,44 or 2,4,6,8,10,12 or whatever

How would you spend it assuming you were the only winner of the jackpot?

    How about you?

If I buy the ticket and win, I will leave my job, for few days will go to some place where I could find some mental peace. After that, will go back to India, will make a small house in the mountains, and live happily ever after.
