I doubt anyone outside of China or HK will have heard of these brands apart from maybe CX.

Actually re the banks, I doubt anyone outside of the finance industry will have heard of the banks.

OH, what about HSBC though? Asian brand or UK brand?

No, it actually started in Asia, and when they took over Midland Bank plc, the UK regulators agreed to the takeover only if they relocated the HQ to London.

Yeah but it's owned by a UK subsidiary and on their books so it's a UK brand.

    I don't agree at all.

Maybe 40 - 50 years ago, sure, but definitely not 20 - 30 years ago when most of the Japanese brands were already well known by then, and were the brands that most people bought. Marty McFly makes a comment in Back to the Future I, that all the best electronics come from Japan ( 1985), when 1950's Doc Brown makes a negative comment about Japanese poor quality.

Japanese brands that were well established 20 - 35 years ago were.....

    NEC VHS VCRs and TV's
    Sanyo electrical appliances and TV's
National VHS video recorders were one of the most popular of all brands, as were their microwave ovens.
Toshiba famed for their TV's and air conditioners
Mitsubishi famed for their air conditioners
Sony Anybody remember the Walkman ? APM speakers, The first compact Disc player ( CDP101 ) the joint developer with Phillips ?
JVC Anybody remember the inventor of VHS video recorders? Which were as popular as National VHS VCRs at the time.
Sharp, which sold more microwave ovens than anybody else. Their VhS video recorders were popular too.

Toyota especially when they started making twin cam 4 valve per cylinder engined cars from early 84/5.
Datsun remember the mighty P510 that did well in the WRC, 240Z and 260Z ?
Mazda cars especially their quirky Wankel rotary engine sports coupes.
Hitachi mainly known for their air conditioners and appliances
Pioneer hifi gear their integrated amplifiers were highly regarded in the 80's
AIWA made excellent audio gear 20 - 30 years ago ( very similar to Sony back then ) their car audio was excellent, and one of the few that had AM stereo.
Clarion car audio another that boasted AM stereo
Luxman audio gear was highly regarded 20 - 30 years ago
Onkyo another mainstay brand that was known globally for high end audio 20 - 30 years ago
Alpine car audio was factory fitted to the Lamborghini Countach from the early to mid 80's
Seiko Watches were very well known 30 - 40 years ago
    Pentax photographic cameras
    Mamiya " "
    Nikon " "
    Fujica " "
    Chinon " "
    Yashica " "
    Minolta " "
    Canon " "

    Suzuki motor cycles
    Honda motor cycles
Kawasaki Motor cycles and Jet Ski's
Yamaha Motor cycles, marine outboard motors and Pianos

Shimano bicycle componentry and fishing reels

That's just off the top of my head, I am sure there are heaps of brands that I have missed, but I do remember just how popular all these brands were when I was a kid, and also, I don't remember any of these products for being particularly cheap at the time. The first CD players were $1200AUS ( Sony CDP 101) back in 1982 which was a tonne of money. So were VHS video recorders, televisions and microwave ovens, all VERY pricey compared to todays consumer electronics...

Carry on, my apologies for veering a little off topic...
