Anna Hazzare - India against corruption

Back in India Hon'ble Anna Hazzare is sitting on fast unto death against corruption in India. His demand is for drafting a bill against corruption by 50% government ministers and 50% from all walks of life.

Once golden sparrow, today India's image has gone so down that Indians are looked down upon the world over. This has happened due to rampant corruption prevalent in Indian system because India has no law to curb corruption. In fact, India laws are framed in such a way to protect criminals.

In USA NRIs r supporting the cause by various methods which is being telecast in media in India as well as US.

We NRIs must support Anna Hazzare if we want to give better India to our children.

Eh? Could you try explaining that again? It makes no sense to me.

On the positive side, atleast there is freedom in the press and the establishment where some of these problems can be highlighted, unlike China..

I personally think there are far more worthy causes to be dealt with at the grass roots levels than corruption. Education and health to me are more important than dealing with corruption - simply because individuals can make a difference in these areas.

True but then money meant for worthy causes are 'lost' due to corruption.

Nah .. lots of money and effort going directly to the people. You don't just give to the Red Cross and forget about it, you work with grass roots organisations where there is passion.

The whole lost through corruption argument is just an excuse for not getting involved. Yes there is a leakage, but the good that is done outweighs it all.

Here's an example of what happens when people put their minds to it.

True but corruption is behind all malices. If corruption is eradicated naturally education, poverty, welfare schemes will get the 'funds' which are earmarked to thos sectors. Right now funds are allocated to several schemes but actually they are going in the pockets of corrupt ministers and bureacrats. This needs to be curbed.

Understand and support. But then some of us choose to fight battles that can actually be won.

I think ending corruption, while a lofty ideal, is far from easy. Even countries like Singapore have corruption to some extent. Lets not even start on the USA, Japan or other developed nations.

Enacting a law to curb corruption is only the first step - who's going to enforce that law? The police & judiciary are probably the most corrupt, especially for everyday Indians.

The root cause is that public servants in India are paid a pittance. You can't expect a public servant to carry out his duties effectively when he sees others gaining more - it's human nature. Everyone wants the best for themselves and their families first. If you look at Politicians' salaries globally, India ranks at the bottom of the list.

I think in this case, technicalities dont matter. It doesnt matter how we can eradicate corruption, where to start, salaries of politicians, cops etc. I think what Anna Hazare has done is sort of unite people in a cause that was mostly swept under the rug. The fact that Indians in India and abroad are talking about uniting against corruption and are willing to do something about it is enough.. for a start. Most people will forget, but some will stick to the cause and make a difference.

At this point of time I dont think we need to make statements like there are far more worthy causes, or it's a huge task etc. We just need to support, give voice. If there's anything I can do to support the cause as an Indian in HK, let me know. BTW: Wearing Black today to support.
