According to the BBC, Abbottabad is 62 miles from Islamabad. Not the capital certainly, but with 81,000 people living there (1998 census via Wiki!) not exactly a remote village either.

Oh, I think that it's close enough - it's a city of about 120,000 only 50k from Islamabad. There was also a large military base right down the street, apparently.

Very naive if you think the US wanted the hassle of dealing with him alive. I suspect he was shot on sight.
