    Innumeracy

Isn't it a really sad reflection on the basic numeracy of the writers and sub-editors at the SCMP that things like this get published?

people familiar with the situation said the new seats would be 20 to 30 per cent larger than existing economy seats in terms of floor area. The cheapest seats of Hong Kong's flag-carrying airline are 44cm wide and rows are spaced 81cm apart in the economy section. With an enlargement of 25 per cent, the width and so-called seat pitch will be roughly 53cm and 1 metre respectively.

    Oh dear.
In the bank recently I paid in few thousand using $100 bills. The teller counted them, put them in a machine which checked the number of notes(fair enough) but then used a calculator to multiply the number of notes by their amount....

I've paid $105 to settle a $45 bill and see the salesperson use a calculator to work out the change.

lol. HSBC, right? And then they ask how much money is there.

Maybe the tellers are beaten if there are any errors at the end of the night.

I do the same (since I hate carrying change), but the salesperson almost always gives me $55 back. Because the cash register "said so".

So if the 20-30% larger floor area is correct, then the new seat width would be about 48-50cm and the pitch about 89-92cm (disregard the seat back depth and assume similar seat width/pitch ratio), not a huge increase but it helps.

But would you pay 50-100% more money for it?

Let's not be too hard on them. They probably all majored in liberal arts at Oxbridge.

I would not personally especially for a short flight, it may still be a good option to have for heavier set folk though.

It is always funny to be shown a grammatical error by an innumerate.
