Slumlord / "development" secretary alleged drunk driving: muppets' responses

"Rimsky" Yuen says that since the slumlord didn't fail a breath test, he didn't break the law. Criminals, take heed: if you don't get caught red-handed, you didn't do anything wrong!

Regina Broomhead Ip scolds the slumlord for not being discreet. Yeah, dummy! Don't get caught next time!

The only sane, non-Three-Wise-Monkeys-ish reaction that I've seen has been from Ronny Tong who held that drinking and driving are bad, etc. He didn't hold forth on the virtues of being more careful while skirting/breaking the law or propound a Heisenberg's cat position.

As usual, while the pan-democrats generally aren't sufficiently slick or motivated enough to achieve their espoused goals, they are thoroughly decent and, on the whole, trustworthy folks. I could imagine buying a used car from Ronny Tong. From Broomhead, Rimsky-Korsakov, or the slumlord, not so much.

The guy has to resign as far as I can see.

The official line on this is clear: http://www.td.gov.hk/en/road_safety/...ng_/index.html

If someone passes a breath analysis test then how is that criminal?

I don't know this incident but if you pass the test, you pass the test.

Rimsky seemed, in the video clip shown on the news, to be saying that, since the slumlord didn't take a breath test, that he didn't break the law. In other words, if you rob a bank but nobody follows you from the scene and tackles you with the loot in your hands, you would not have broken the law.

I hate drink driving and I believe the alcohol limit should be 2%, like in much of Europe and a lifetime ban.

However, in HK, the legal limit is high enough that one could have a couple of beers in a couple of hours and be legally fit.

There's nothing here and your comparison to robbing a bank is ridiculous.

Yes, robbing a bank is just money. Drink driving kills people.

Hong Kong is pretty much in line with most of Europe at 0.05

UK/Canada/Most of USA are significantly higher at 0.08

Thats the law : enforcement is a different issue.

It's good to see that our resident driver/guitar player is well aware of the limits in place in HK.....
