Much as I love the place, Italy is unfortunately a prime example of the infantilisation of an entire society. Obviously, there are a few adults still keeping things ticking over, but at some point they're just gonna shrug...

6 scientists jailed for manslaughter for failing to predict Italian earthquake-implication for HK?

So you might have heard in the news that 6 Italian scientists has been jailed for manslaughter for failing to predict the deadly 2009 Italian earthquake:

Italian disaster experts have resigned in protest of the verdict, saying they can't do their duties:

Although New Scientist clarified that the scientists in question weren't prosecuted for failing to predict the earthquake, but failing to communicate the risk of such a quake:

But is it always so easy to draw the line? Would this have a chilling effect on scientific research and science itself? What would happen if the Hong Kong Observatory is prosecuted for failing to predict a typhoon hitting HK? Let's hope HK doesn't follow the Italian example.

I haven't read article or details, but I'll offer my thought on a whim:

I think if someone can prove that HKO is not raising T8's solely because of stock market or commercial influence, then yes they should be held accountable and prosecuted to extent of law. The proof will always be a thin line, and up to the prosecutors to provide enough valid evidence.

Agreed but then the 'person' manipulating it already has the government in there pockets.
