It looks like the quake struck the Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) region. No damage reported yet anywhere on land.
The focus so far appears to be on the tidal wave generated by the quake. A warning was issued along coastal Alaska (now downgraded to an advisory). Waves measuring several centimetres were reported along the northern tip of Vancouver Island and parts of coastal BC.
"This was a big earthquake, the biggest earthquake we’ve had in Canada since 1949,” Simon Fraser University (SFU) geologist John Clague told the Sun.
All eyes on Hawaii, where it is just past 2305 hrs now. The first of the waves was said to have reached the shores at 2228 hrs local time.
Hopefully nothing major.
