Boris, interesting to know that you were (are?) a socialist - I was also with the party when I was at uni. But I quickly got disillusioned after realising that the left these days is more right than the right, in all the worst possible ways. That might explain my eventual choice of career eh? (no need to answer that one)

Not sure if the Hain story, or indeed anything, is enough to restore my faith though.

    Hi Scotch
When your young, and you would have a more recent memory than I, you are more passionate and receptive to strong emotions and a need to rid the world of all that is bad. It is only you and your views that are correct. Nothing else is relevant.

Later you add to the recipe with experience and a weariness of the world that calms the raging fire inside.

I grew up in the age of the demo. We had radical heroes and radical ideals. Sadly - most of the ideals go unfulfilled.

Hain on the other hand was an out and out political climber. Not in the mold of Foot or Benn ( Wilson's comment of " He immatures with age " was spot on ) and tried to hide his affluent past by forming the gang politic AKA The Anti Nazi League, which only shouted a lot or picked fight no one needed to win.

God, I loved being young and feisty !

Didn't Bismark say something like "if you are young and conservative you have no heart; if you are old and liberal you have no brain"?
Keep in mind my conservative and liberal are US terms.

A Frenchman originally as far as I can tell:
Francois Guizot (1787–1874) “Not to be a republican at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head."

(Subsequently evolved with different political groupings reflecting the changing times - the original is republican vs monarchist.)
