Israel says European resolution on circumcision 'racist'

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israel labelled as "racist" and "anti-religious" Friday a resolution of the pan-European human rights body calling for regulation of circumcision practices.

The Council of Europe resolution urged its 47 member states to ensure the latest medical and sanitary conditions are met during ritual circumcisions, which are often performed on boys at an early age in Judaism and Islam.

It called for "dialogue between... medical doctors and religious representatives, so as to overcome some of the prevailing traditional methods, which do not take into consideration the best interest of the child and the latest state of medical art."
Israel took particular exception to PACE's adoption of a single resolution dealing with both female genital mutilation and the circumcision of young boys on religious grounds.

"Circumcision of male children is an ancient religious tradition.... Any comparison of this tradition to the reprehensible and barbaric practice of female genital mutilation is either appalling ignorance, at best, or defamation and anti-religious hatred, at worst," the ministry said.

I agree that suggesting male circumcision and female genital mutilation are comparable is incredibly ignorant, but I can't see any justification for opposing proper medical practices.

Luckily I've got no interest. The one and only time I visited the USA it lived down to my expectations.

You're better off spending your life in Tuen Mun and talking trash behind your computer. In the US, you would get beat down rather quickly with your mouth..

"Circumcision of male children is an ancient religious tradition...."
Seems to have its roots in Middle East and Africa, which today still have the highest rates. Both Jewish and Muslim populations practice it as part of religious beliefs. Also, historically, Egyptian and African ancient traditions of circumcision.

It's interesting how the US and UK diverged in circumcision practice in the 19th century. Prior to the 19th century, both countries did not practice it as a default, but UK ended up with low rates, while the US still has a majority of males circumcised at birth.

Let parents decide...stay out of their decision.

the American Academy of Pediatrics now says that the preventative health benefits of infant circumcision clearly outweigh the risks.

An AAP task force formed in 2007 examined scientific studies conducted between 1995 through 2010 to evaluate if a revision was needed. The new, stronger language is a result of emerging evidence that found links between circumcision and decreased risk of urinary tract infections, some kinds of cancer, HPV, HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

"The evidence was becoming clearer, and it's now obvious there's a preventative effect," says Dr. Michael Brady, chairman of the department of pediatrics at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and a member of the AAP task force.

Ah, CC is here - the defender of the land of the free. And of course that freedom can only be defended with violence. Oh the irony.
