UK referendum on the Secession of Scotland from the UK union.

Texas and Southern state secession from the US union was ended by Abraham Lincoln killing 620,000 of his own people. Texans and US Southerners are watching with great interest as the UK referendum on Scotland's secession from the UK approaches. There is much debate about economic, political and patriotic ramifications as the event progresses in highly civilized fashion.

Texans and Southerners would greatly appreciate comments and enlightenment from the many UK and Scotland insiders on this forum. Our education system is pretty much isolationist, so please excuse the occasional glaring ignorance in our comments.

The case for Scottish independence is a fraud being propagated by an egotistical Alex Salmond who merely wants to be able to rub shoulders with world leaders at the UN and EU at the expense of the Scottish taxpayer.

Scotland will vote resoundingly to stay in Union with England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

So Salmond is "first Minister" and would become "Prime Minister". Would that make him equal to the Prime Minister of Australia?

Except that most of the soldiers in the Scottish regiments of the British armed forces would likely join ours before joining Salmond's provincial platoons with no world standing.

I don't think the US civil war example with Texas and the Southern US's secession attempt is quite comparable to Scotland's case, OP. You forgot to mention the part about the slavery system which the South tried to keep and which Lincoln sought to overturn. Scotland by contrast has no issue with slavery when it comes to their potential secession. No one has a problem with the St. Andrew's Cross, but many Blacks have a problem with the Confederate flag...

all the polls are showing a clear no vote, i.e. against independence.

Makes sense that soldiers of any ethnic background would remain in the Army where they are under an enlistment contract.

Is the UK a union like the United States, or is it more like the EU? What happened to the British Commonwealth?

it is not really a voluntary union being one created by conquest. in recent years some level of autonomy has been granted. did u know there are more nations play football than are members of the UN because of Scotland Wales and NI?
