I think we should just let the mess cleans by itself...bad/weak bank will be bought back by better/stronger bank or equity will be injected in their capital base by say some Chinese or middle eastern sovereign funds...

The irony (as a french) is that the US are becoming more french than the french (far more nationalization this year in the US than in France)...soon they will learn how to work only 35H a week and drink coffee - eat croissant at a nearby cafe!

What utter rot. In an armagedon scenario as you describe (“In for example, a hyperinflationary environment, you might be able to pick up property and businesses for a couple of gold coins. No kidding…”, gold will be as worthless as anything else. Skills and maybe guns will be the only tradable commodities.

The US government intendeds to borrow the money from world financial markets (issue Treasury securities).

Then delever in a more controlled manner (as anyone with a high debt to equity ratio should try to do) once confidence returns to the market

    With the greatest of respect…..

Treasury securities = IOUs in exchange for cash in hand = printing money

But you may well be right about the guns and skills thing. Still, nice to have something shiny to look at during all that doom and gloom…
