Argh, sick of posting with a phone. I lost everything I wrote. Anyway, I think, fine, *women* should have the right to bear arms. Because it seems just as much as a man problem as a gun problem. And I think gun hobbyists should sacrifice their right to own guns for the sake of the betterment of society.

A landmark 1999 study actually tried to answer this question. Its findings — which scholars say still hold up — are that America doesn't really have a significantly higher rate of crime compared to similar countries. But that crime is much likelier to be lethal: American criminals just kill more people than do their counterparts in other developed countries. And guns appear to be a big part of what makes this difference.
America doesn’t have more crime than other rich countries. It just has more guns. - Vox

If you start at the very source of the issue - rights of people to do whatever they want, then every law, protecting every right has to be abolished.

    No exceptions.

Let's start at the root of the problem, stupid shit like constitutions. Abolish that and go back to Darwin... Survival of the fittest.

@Skyhook I *have* lived in these rough areas. I prefer less/no guns. And I'm very grateful I have the opportunity to now live somewhere safer. It's not academic, it's just common sense, guns are very lethal. You don't get second chances with them. People have less of a chance to fight back or run away. The crime and violence in society won't go away -- at least not easily -- but we have the ability to alter how leathal these situations are.

Oh but you have of course and of course you are pretty much an expert on every other topic posted on here from coffee to cars to planes to drugs to best burgers in town etc etc.

In short you KIA - so we should all agree with you.

Seriously it's not rocket science...less gun in circulation...less death by firearm...it really (yes) is that simple.

Of course criminal will still find ways to get them but let me ask you...when is the last time you saw a "normal guy" carrying a gun and being able to stop a school shooting or a shopping mall shooting? Hardly ever. So how does having the right to bear arm even help in this case??

Sure firearm for sport - no problem. Firearm for protection....best (worse) joke ever.

This is the bit that never seems a logical argument to suggest people that want

Guns have a huge cost to society but the majority of this cost is socialised through the additional medical, insurance, policing, security etc that society must share. This is a VERY socialist concept.

People advocating more appropriate gun laws are in effect pushing towards a more users pay principle which is very capitalist in approach.

Again having a few in society indulge in their self gratifying hobbies but having society pick-up most of the cost is a VERY socialist concept.
