Would be more worrying if these attackers used the Internet to attack critical services like hospitals, transport etc.
There have been some increasingly scary warnings in various security groups / blogs about large learning exercises being conducted by what appear to be state sponsored hackers.
Should be interesting to watch how the next wave is dealt with and what long term solutions are put in place.
We have to build a wall!...a firewall!
It's gonna be 10m high!
Worth a read.

Are "nation states" the new WMDs?
Back in the real world other security specialists such as Krebs (KrebsOnSecurity.com) are openly suspecting these attacks may (1) be orchestrated by people within their very own security industry (spreading the DDoS disease and selling the cure) with some even naming suspects at certain US colleges and the FBI knocking doors.... and (2) that the increase of attacks is rather related to the Mirai source code release earlier this month (anyone can now make use of millions of insecure IoT devices on the internet, the source is on github)...
About released source code called Mirai:

On Friday's attack (seems confirmed a Mirai attack):

Mr. Assange is still alive and WikiLeaks is still publishing. We ask supporters to stop taking down the US internet. You proved your point.https://t.co/XVch196xyL
