Only speaking about my friends, not all Chinese women! I'm a woman myself and my comment wasn't a dig, just an observation. I'm not much of a homemaker either

    Not the sex workers.

Courting a Western man increases a woman's social status in Thailand and can be a quick way out of poverty. Couple that with a very hospitable culture and it can be quickly interpreted as being submissive. Thai women do have clear goals though of what they expect out of any relationship. If the man can't deliver, the relationship ends as quickly as it got started. Western man can be quite submissive in handing over their wallets in those types of relationships.

When other Western people see these kinds of relationships, they often just see the submissive wife. They don't see the foreign man handing over wads of cash for her sick mom, her rent, or whatever else she desires. It's a two-way street.

Mind you though, what I stated is also just a generalization. I know plenty of good marriages between Westerners and Thais. But the above scenario is very common.

There are also plenty of thai that would not touch a westerner/foreigner with a ten foot pole just like in HK and other asian countries. Poverty makes people do all kinds of things but not everyone is poor.

Anyway, asians are as different from each other as westerners are... A Thai from Isan is quite different than one from BKK or the North or a Hill tribe or the south. Some are christians, buddhists, muslims. As for a typical american, that doesn't really exist either. Whenever people try to put labels on a nation or a race, they end up looking silly at best and bigoted at worst.

There are as many different stories behind western men - asian women marriages as there are such marriages.

There are about 2,250,000,000 asian females so good luck generalising them.

I'd point out that, in general, European gene equipped women are fading flowers LOOOONG before those of Oriental birth.

One only has to compare the two even by watching them on the TV news programs to be struck by the Chalk & Cheese differences.

Far too many "Barrels of Lard" walking around in - {say} London's streets and compare that situation with Chinese ladies in {say} Shanghai or Hong Kong.

I recall, when living in Taikoo Shing 40 years ago, there was a Chinese man who had married a French woman some time previously. She was 90+% towards being "old & raddled" even though she was not particularly ancient at that time - as far as I could see.

I was SOOOOO glad that I'd married into my Chinese family some 41 years ago as my wife is still a looooooong way from becoming "old & raddled" and doesn't keep needing thousands of Dollars in "make do & mend" cosmetic patch-uppery.

I recall a Wanchai Chinese office-girl that I worked with in 1976 telling me that she would NEVER marry anyone but a Chinese.

Well, good luck to her; it was her choice, and I wasn't chasing her, by then I was engaged to my delectable wife-to-be !

Our daughter told us that she would NEVER marry anyone except a Chinese, so she did just that around 4 years ago - with our approval - and now they have a beautiful 3.5 year old daughter - who speaks English, Cantonese & Mandarin.

Me? I struggle through my life with a mere smattering of Cantonese.

I rather suspect that a European wife would not have struggled to keep me upright when it seemed like I was a gross drunkard when she sought to get me back to our hotel in Osaka from the JR train station. Luckily, she pleaded with a young Japanese couple to assist us - which they did!

No, I was NOT drunk, don't know what it was, but I was ambulanced to hospital to recover (somewhat) and back to the Intercontinental Hotel where I was pretty much bedbound for several days before limo-ing back to the Airport for a HK Airlines flight back home again - and wheelchaired thro' the airport to a limo to get me home again.

Oh, and by the way, thankfully my medical expenses were all covered by my annual travel insurance & yesterday I got back HK$ 3,730.08 which is much more than the annual premium !

I don't doubt that some here will "slag me off" for some of the above writings - but I can categorically state that - I'm so happy to be married into my Chinese family - and NOT married to some faded violet of an English woman - I feel that my previous close encounters (and escapes) from being married to any UK girl was a VERY lucky escape!

The "Lai-gam" [Bride-price] I paid for my lady-love has been paid back many times over with the care and affection afforded me, and her ascension to a high position in the HK Inland Revenue Dept. with a very livable pension for her - and a pittance for me (in Atlantic Pesos) from the UK Gov't pension fund.

I rest my case - until someone "pokes" me again!

Absolutely, but they are not the ones that Westerners usually come in frequent contact with or form relationship with. Hence the stereotype.

One needs to pay attention to where the scene is and where stereotypes gets formed. And that clearly takes place in Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya. Western men go there en mass by and Thai women work them to make a living or form relationship.

Do I agree with those stereotypes? No, but there is no denying they exist for various reasons. Does it suck when people become victims of stereotypes? Absolutely.

Nonetheless, there's no denying that if a Western man is looking for a submissive relationship in Thailand, most likely they're going to succeed. It doesn't mean all Asian women are submissive.
