Perhaps if you had lived in Minsk, Hanoi, San José, Santo Domingo etc you may not see this as an East / West issue.

From the InternationalLoveScout site on dating in China for western men:

"Very few international dating sites, or guides, pay any attention to China as an ideal place to meet a foreign bride. That’s their loss and your gain though, because China is literally stacked 20-stories deep in beautiful, educated, ambitious single women. And not ambitious in the “give me all your money” kind of way – they’re the perfect wife and business partner.
Want proof? Look at any Chinese family in your neighborhood. Hard workers and completely loyal to each other, right?
Another big learning for you is that Chinese girls who hit their late 20s or 30s, and still aren’t married, are generally left on the shelf. They’re treated like 60 year old spinsters by Chinese guys, so they’re literally dying to meet a western guy because they know that life really only does start at 30."

    Wow...

No wonder I have been happily single these past 30 years...

I already agreed that this exists everywhere. Not sure why you need to share an article steeped in bigotry.

Nonetheless, in Thailand it's a whole new level. The sheer numbers are just not comparable, nor do I think it's as easy in some of the other countries. Making the comparison between Thailand and China is just laughable.

Courting a Western man increases a woman's social status in Thailand and can be a quick way out of poverty. Couple that with a very hospitable culture and it can be quickly interpreted as being submissive. Thai women do have clear goals though of what they expect out of any relationship. If the man can't deliver, the relationship ends as quickly as it got started. Western man can be quite submissive in handing over their wallets in those types of relationships.

When other Western people see these kinds of relationships, they often just see the submissive wife. They don't see the foreign man handing over wads of cash for her sick mom, her rent, or whatever else she desires. It's a two-way street.

Mind you though, what I stated is also just a generalization. I know plenty of good marriages between Westerners and Thais. But the above scenario is very common.
I remember some American guy on a forum suggesting that the living standard of middle-class Thais is way better than that their counterparts in the United States. I then asked him why are there so many American men travelling to Thailand to marry Thai women but not the other way round. Don't think I ever received a good answer for that question.

Have you been to Northern Vietnam? I can see why some would suggest there are similarities.
