    Longform Journalism Recs

The thread I started (link below about a guy who games airline rewards programs to travel the world in luxury at next to no cost) made me think we need a thread dedicated to longform journalism.

Sometimes we don't have the appetite to read an entire book. But then most articles aren't much more than 2-minute blurbs.

That's where these meaty, deep-dive articles fit the bill.

This one is on my current list of things to read when I have some time. Might be of random interest to @hullexile

The "surveillance system" is pretty much what they have in any western city. A control centre housing police, fire and ambulance operators linked to the 911 lines and to CCTV cameras. Unfortunately the only one n the Philippines, normally you wait until your house burns down before the firefighters arrive (and for our house they turned up with no water) and as my wife says "ambulances are for carrying dead bodies".

Which would people prefer, the evil system of Davao (so western system) or nothing?

Despite the article stating the Davao Death Squad as fact, a ten year investigation by the then government desperate to nail Duterte found nothing. Two Senate hearings found nothing. He had this whole department set up to kill over 1400 people and left no evidence, quite amazing.

FYI .. posted it and tagged you as I thought it might be interesting to read, was not really expressing any opinion on my part. I remain a curious bystander.. thats it.

    Yes I understood that.

Unfortunately longform journalism gives the scope for more critical analysis but does not guarantee it.
