    Retirement in Asia

    All,

If you were to retire in Asia, which country would you choose and why?

    Thanks.

Malaysia looks good for us right now. Possibly Penang.

    Pros:

    • M2H Visa Program
    • Good Medical Infrastructure
    • English Speaking
    • Good Food
    • Frequent Flights to HK
    • Property rentals are cheap as is ownership
    • Car ownership seems reasonable, as is parking
    • Insurance seems reasonable as are medical costs
    • Taxes seem to be manageable

    Cons:
    • Its f'ing HOT all year round.

I'd add diversity to the pros list too. You've rekindled once contemplated move @shri! Studied there for couple of years back in the days at Stamford college and enjoyed the hospitality from locals. In fact, I'd say Malaysia is truly Asia!

Thats why us second tier expats prefer Malaysia.

Confusing laws regarding the price of property that must be purchased by non-locals? Or am I just stupid? Can you send a link where it's clearly explain, please?

    @Kowloon Goon

Seems simple-ish. I've certainly not researched this in great detail, but it is on a check list (right after rent for a long time.. and figure if you really want to live there).

I should say, right now HK's "foreigner" stamp duty does make Malaysia look good.

I like Taiwan, but then if you don't speak Chinese it won't be as good, but it's good for health care, cheap cost of living, except for the expensive housing. But coming from Hong Kong everything is cheap. Only thing is earthquakes and fear of China's takeover which is unlikely.

And the minor issue of no "retirement" type visa or residency?
