    India: Jammu & Kashmir

Probably not of great interest to most expats here, but some disturbing/ commendable developments in India .

This explainer was posted before the events on Monday, which seems to have popped up on most international news yesterday evening.

Been watching it unfold on AlJazeera. Now Pakistan is asking for US mediation?? NO!! I mean, if it were a normal president, OK, but the Trump administration? Is there anyone there who could find it on a map even?

Very cleverly played out legal amendments to abrogate the special status. Awaiting final stamp from the Supreme Court of India.

Thanks for the video - I am so clueless at the moment about what has transpired other than the removal of the special status.

I am not familiar with the issues to understand the significance. Can someone explain to the unenlightened in simple terms?

Generally any change in the constitution has to be passed by both houses of the parliament.. He has clear majority in lower house but need support from other parties and alliance in upper house so 'wait and watch' type situation.. Also it will be challenged by some civic body or J&K Govt in supreme court so again lets see..

Latest update:- The bill is also passed in upper house, now wait for challenge in Supreme court..

Presidential Order of Yesterday, should be categorized as a constitutional amendment (as it amended article 367). It needs 2/3rd majority in both houses of parliament. Article 367 interprets Article 370.

What they passed yesterday and today is just the final outcome of that 'constitutional amendment' , repeal of special provisions to Kashmir in Article 370, and hence, needs just a simple majority.

Presidential Order looks legally dubious, prima facie ... Court Battle will be interesting !
