So it only took 1275 days from the referendum to give the people what they voted for. There were just 339 days between the Berlin Wall falling and German reunification in comparison.
Nice twiddles to the act as well. Putting the no-extension clause in means the EU Council will ratify fully knowing that the UK's legal position is that the Government's hands have been tied by Parliament and there will be no extensions. Keeps the pressure on to get the FTA done. The new speaker didn't entertain any wrecking amendments to the bill either.
Also, thanks to Gina Miller for making the law clear that Parliament must have a say and the Government can't use the Royal Perogative to make treaty changes. Her case law means the Government is going to lock itself out from an extension and Parliament has also decreed it wants the Government to handle the negotiations (as is the norm for international treaties) and doesn't want to have any further say. Delicious.
What a turnaround and what a use of strategy. Classic Dom as they say,
The programme motion has also been passed so the bill will have Royal Ascent by 31 January. Lovely...
