    2020 Olympics - News & Discussions

Canada announces it will not send a team to the 2020 Olympics.

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC), backed by their Athletes’ Commissions, National Sports Organizations and the Government of Canada, have made the difficult decision to not send Canadian teams to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2020.

Following our general theme of blaming everything on Canada (relax... you can blame this on South Park if you're Canadian)...

Who cares, its only Canada . Kidding...

On a more serious note, is this the start of a trend of mass withdrawal?

Not much point in this thread, there will not be a 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Maybe a 2021 event, maybe cancelled altogether. However it's been obvious for several weeks that it won't be going ahead this year, speculator-less or not.

For me it is an academic exercise in cataloging news items on how the Olympics get shutdown / postponed

From the Guardian - I think this was edited after the Canada announcement.

The announcement from Canada comes as Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe, hinted that postponing the Tokyo Olympics could be an option if the coronavirus pandemic made it impossible to hold the Games this summer and with the full quota of athletes and spectators.

It is the first time that Abe has publicly conceded that the timing of the Games, which are due to open on 24 July, may have to change, as more athletes and sports federations added their voices to calls for a postponement.

This was all a game of chicken. IOC waiting for Tokyo to call it. Tokyo waiting for IOC to recommend pushing the dates back. Countries waiting for either entity to call it. Now that one country has said they're out others will follow and IOC/Tokyo can blame it on them and they get to keep the broadcast rights money from the networks.

    Australia chimes in ...

The AOC held an Executive Board meeting via teleconference this morning and unanimously agreed that an Australian Team could not be assembled in the changing circumstances at home and abroad.
Australian Team Chef de Mission for Tokyo Ian Chesterman says he has communicated to athletes after receiving feedback from athletes from more than 25 sports last week.

“It’s clear the Games can’t be held in July. Our athletes have been magnificent in their positive attitude to training and preparing, but the stress and uncertainty has been extremely challenging for them.

“They have also shouldered the burden of concern for their peers around the world. That has been a consistent message to me.”

Fair enough, there is a lot of money and politics at stake so that is why we are seeing all the dancing to and fro. The ultimate conclusion isn't in doubt though.
