    The Invasion of Venezuela....

A less cynical topic .. The Invasion of Venezuela ...

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 3, reports began to surface on Twitter of military activity out at sea off the coast of Macuto, a small city on Venezuela’s coast just north of Caracas. In one video shot before the sun had come up, a man films what looks like police vessels out at sea. There is a helicopter flying the area, and gunshots can be heard.

Shortly after 7:30 AM, Minister of the Interior Nestor Reverol gave a televised address during which he said that “terrorist mercenaries” had attempted a “maritime invasion” of the country, and that they had come from Colombia. Shortly thereafter, news would break that eight of the men on the boat had been killed and two had been captured alongside weapons and equipment:
    And some random Trump photos.

Does smell lke a staged event. When the Venezuela government want to deflect the attention away from their own misrule, they can always point to a convenient external threat. Then again, I suppose it is possible that this is a real, albeit poorly thought-out, plot. In that case they would have become useful idiots for the regime.

    From FP Security Brief:

A botched raid in Venezuela. Think Bay of Pigs meets reality TV. In one of the more bizarre chapters of 2020, a former U.S. Green Beret allegedly mounted an attempted coup against embattled Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro with a ragtag group of exiled militants and several U.S. citizens working for Silvercorp, his U.S.-based private security firm. The U.S. government has denied any involvement in the plot, which unsurprisingly failed. Maduro announced this week he had captured 13 of the plotters, including two U.S. citizens.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday added, “If we had been involved, it would have gone differently.” But with the reports of detained U.S. citizens, the State Department has a new diplomatic headache on top of the quagmire that is its Venezuela policy. “If, in fact, these are Americans that are there… If the Maduro regime decides to hold them, we’ll use every tool to try to get them back. It’s our responsibility to do so,” Pompeo said. U.S. News and World Report’s Paul Shinkman has more on the story.

The really weird plot does raise questions. Silvercorp, the Florida-based mercenary company that trained these would-be "freedom" fighters, was tweeting about this as it was taking place. But it doesn't take a general to know it is idiotic in the extreme to broadcast your movement to your enemy. The whole plot seem to set itself up to fail. One can make a case this was a staged event gone wrong. But more likely, just a poorly thought-out plan that went bonkers as it did.

Here is more background on the strange coup attempt and also mentions Jordan Goudreau, the head of Silvercorps and the alleged mastermind behind this crackpot attack with echoes of "Bay of Pigs":
