Grounded ship at Suez Canal: Still stuck?

So the cargo ship Ever Light is still grounded at the Suez Canal and blocking shipping traffic?

The operator of the grounded ship is the Taiwanese shipping line, Evergreen. But the actual owner of this particular ship and the one responsible for its cargo is the Japanese firm Shoei Kisen Kaisha. Shoei is now facing many millions of dollars in legal liability, even if the ship can be refloated tomorrow.

The other shipping lines which has been forced to incur extra cost in the delays will be looking for compensation claims. Shoei say they have insurance, but given the scale of exposure, the insurance company will be looking to escape paying out claims anyway they can, which means Shoei may end up footing the bill, potentially resulting in bankruptcy and ceasing of operations of the company if the claims are expensive enough.

The longer the ship remain grounded and blocking canal traffic, the higher claims will be. As usual in situations like this, the only ones standing to benefit are the lawyers. I bet they are greedily circling over the parties, preparing summons for lawsuits and counting all the extra legal fees that will fatten their wallets.

So lets have a guess, when do you think the ship can be refloated and move away?

Seems hard to blame the crew of Ever Given - when they enter the canal they get provided a 'Suez Crew' who take over command during transit - sounds like it was those guys asleep at the helm?

Knowing Egypt, I'm guessing 'Suez Pilot' seen as a cushy job given out to connected insiders... whatever could go wrong with that?

Well, maybe its the canal pilot's incompetence but the legal liability lies with the owner. So maybe the owner can sue the canal authority, but who knows how long that requires and where that will take.

Ever Given - not the most creative name for a ship, but at least it fits the template - other vessels in their fleet are Ever Lasting, Ever Learned, Ever Lucid, Ever Lovely, ...
