If there isn’t a prospect of use, there is no deterrence. Since Syria’s red line was flouted, only actions and not words have had any meaning, and the eagerness to leave Afghanistan only demonstrates the appetite for conflict.
Meanwhile the anti-war brigade blaming the West, the media, the industro-military complex etc. will need to reach for new rationalisations to absorb/boost the propagandists.
In the world of the five minutes span attention, I wonder if this is not a bit of an overreaction. Not even the leader of the free world is willing to dedicate nothing more but a few “economic sanctions” on this.
