Thought you trumpy folks were against big govt and all..

This follows similar moves in areas such as banking, energy, telecommunications, as well as the media. In each sector, the government used punitive taxes and regulation or launched takeovers to put its allies in charge.
Sounds like something that would make you get out of your arm chair and march to his inauguration or something..

Free but not fair election. Will the EU do something?

    Democracy
The functioning of the EU is founded on representative democracy. A European citizen automatically enjoys political rights. Every adult EU citizen has the right to stand as a candidate and to vote in elections to the European Parliament. EU citizens have the right to stand as a candidate and to vote in their country of residence, or in their country of origin.

Does anything in the article go against anything in the EU democracy quote?

I would argue the 'fair' aspect in an election is a key part of a representative democracy but obviously the line is somewhat fuzzy.

Yes I agree it is very important, but it is nowhere in the EU quote you gave. Just the right to stand as a candidate and the right to vote. Perhaps "fairness" is too open to challenge and argument?
