Paid fans .. not paid, but remain fans?

Members of the Fan Leader Network from two European countries said their payments had been cancelled three days ago and that authorities had blamed the decision on the bad press which followed the revelation that fans were being paid.

Fans were told in a message, seen by the Guardian: “Due to the recent developments in the media, we are keen to protect our visiting fans from the erroneous misinformed statements regarding ‘fans receiving payment for the trip’. Accordingly, the daily allowance will unfortunately no longer be issued. The allowance was intended as a small uplift on your own personal funds to assist with refreshments during your stay.”

The alcohol ban only applies to poor people .

"ban on alcohol consumption seemed to apply only to fans attending games. Beer and other drinks, including an official FIFA Champagne and an array of sommelier-selected wines, will still be available in stadium luxury suites reserved for FIFA officials and other wealthy guests."

Qatar totally taking the piss now.

Bidding for the tournament: "we promise X, Y and Z"

Two days before the tournament starts. "Just kidding. LOL"

    And Fifa can do nothing.

Poor Budweiser. Spends millions on sponsorship and now the the dominant brand conversation is around whether its beer tastes like piss.

No expectations of FIFA to begin with so pfft to them for being a spineless pushover just as expected. But Qataris.. 😑

This is how you screw over an entire culture and race of people for next few generations, by acting or condoning actions like this. Stereotypes get created for a reason. Cuz what this really got to do with Islam or no alcohol being part of their culture. Nothing - the backflip has nothing to do with either of that, if it was that important to their culture, they would have never budged on it in the first place. But when you keep using Islam and your culture as the excuse for lack of integrity, not even a display of slight embarrassment abt the backflip, then you get exactly the stereotype you ask for. No one else to blame.

Isn't the writer some sort of ESG Guru? I seem to recall having a long chat with him 20 odd years ago and a little surprised by this stance.

Not a boycott, but my interest in the World Cup has to be the lowest ever.
