I can't see why knowing the private tax returns of a politician is in the public interest. There are audited laws in place they need to follow to pay tax. That should be sufficient.

Nobody cares. He isn't president anymore and the voters have already held him accountable for his lies. The returns also contain no bombshell about him committing any illegal acts.

I’m sure he lied and cheated on his taxes - he has a history of manipulating building valuations to generate non-existent losses to offset against income and minimize tax. No doubt this will all become clear over time as more light is thrown on his shitty little empire.

Probably, but there is no way Congress, the news or the public would be able to verify that just from releasing his 1040s. But then, proving he is a tax cheat was never the purpose of the whole thing, only to possibly "embarrass" him. Or they would have released proof of his illegal acts instead.

This is true. It is also very interesting that the IRS failed in their legal obligation to audit him. It reflects very poorly on them and it wouldn’t be too surprising to find undue influence had been exerted on them.
