I was in a 7.6 and the sound was something else. Then to see a whole city lights go out with flashes of the substations blowing. Then think of several million people running out of their buildings at the sametime screaming. Not something to ever forget.
This one yesterday got hit with a 7.8 then later in the day a 7.6 a few 100km away and both very shallow.

I was in Tokyo for what was the strongest quake felt in Tokyo since the tsunami (at that time, it was May 2014) and it felt like i was in a water bed.

Probably the best place to be for a large earthquake although this one was just 6.2 so nothing like the ones being discusssed here but It's the only experience ive had other than the occasional small tremor you feel here.

So sad, only space-age construction like Taipei 101 can protect against an earthquake that enormous.

Watching the news, you see 1000s of tents being sent but it is going to take years to rebuild.
After 1999 the last of the deprem evleri (earthquake temp shelters) werent emptied till 2009 or so.
tents arent going to last 10 years but the quick prefab shelters will. If only there were a few thousand to spare...............Penny's bay?

As a kid my wife spent two years in a Red Cross tent. She had a great time but I doubt the adults thought it was fun.

This gets worse by the hour, as you say rebuilding will be a long long process.

Have a great life you poor little girl. One of many heartbreaking stories but a new life begins.

On their way from the Philippines, 16 tons of equipment, 31 medical staff, plus army and disaster response teams. Unfortunately the Philippines is well prepared for disaster.

I wonder how much time it takes for all these foreign teams to prepare for the photo op? I am sure the people waiting under several tons of concrete dont mind waiting a bit longer (not pointing the finger as all countries do this photo op thing instead of just getting their arses on a plane as quick as possible.

Meanwhile news what HK has offered yet?
