    Drama at Open AI

This came out of the blue for me. I guess being a non-profit in such an over hyped industry is challenging for some of the individuals involved.

A group of investors including Microsoft and prominent venture capital firms, along with employees at the company, were exploring options to resolve the crisis, according to three people briefed on the discussions.

These options include removing the board of the non-profit that oversees OpenAI and reinstalling Altman, who was pushed out of the ChatGPT parent on Friday, and co-founder Greg Brockman, who quit the company hours later, sending shockwaves through Silicon Valley.

That's what happens when investors don't have board seats...

I don't think Microsoft and the rest have made charitable donations to a non profit.

Joke on the street is .. Altman's job was the first proven casualty of ChatGPT's advanced AI ..

It is just a stunt to show AI is better at making decisions than a board made up of humans.

    From.CNBC...

    • OpenAI has named former Twitch head Emmett Shear as its new CEO, CNBC has confirmed.
    • The move comes two days after OpenAI fired Sam Altman in an announcement that shocked Silicon Valley.
    • A group of investors, including Microsoft and Thrive Capital, had been trying to bring Altman back.

And Satya to the rescue ..
Microsoft hires former OpenAI chief Sam Altman - https://on.ft.com/47Au1gF

Microsoft has hired Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to head up a team conducting artificial intelligence research after the pair were pushed out of OpenAI, the company they co-founded, on Friday.

Altman and Brockman “together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success,” wrote Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella in a post on social media site X on Monday.

Conspiracy angle: it's a government coup because US govt already has close ties to Microsoft and wants to oversee AI's development. Re-hiring of Sam was part of plan. Now there's better transparency and no concerns about buyout of Microsoft due to antitrust laws.

Some of them may get caught up in non-compete dramas. The Greg chap wasn't fired, just demoted.
Given some of the tweets Sam Altman sent out, maybe half the staff supported him and would jump ship.

Supposedly some entity in the mix was worth $80b and some staff may have been able to cash in some RSU's. Not sure how that will work now and how much they would lose.

Seattle may not be good as the OpenAI headquarters. Who knows, they may have space in San Francisco, in the MCS / sales office location. Seattle weather is sh*t.

Microsoft has deep pockets. Some of those top folks would be on USD$20m pa comp packages and money can pay for nicer things in life. Other folks on maybe $1m signing bonus, $1m deferred stock, $400-$500k pa.

Microsoft hasn't paid as well as the FAANG companies in general. It did have decent healthcare and 401k, etc.

Microsoft stock price took a big hit Friday on the OpenAI news. Not sure if they will go back up on market open on US Monday.

The new OpenAI interim CEO seems to want to run the company at 0 for a while, then go back to 1-2 instead of speed 10...

    ymmv.
