    2024 French Elections

    • Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally won about 34% of the vote in the first round of legislative election, exit polls showed, putting it in reach of becoming the biggest political force in the French parliament.
    • The New Popular Front (NFP), a hastily assembled left-wing coalition, was projected to win around 29% of the vote, the exit polls showed, while President Emmanuel Macron’s Together alliance was on about 20.5%-23%.
    • Pressure was mounting during the evening from left and centrist figures for tactical voting in the second round next Sunday.
    • A majority of constituencies will face a second-round run-off.
    • 289 seats required for an absolute majority. 65 MPs were elected in the first round – a high number. These included 38 MPs for the far-right National Rally and its alliance with Eric Ciotti of Les Républicains. That figure is more than double the number Le Pen had said she expected.

Yeah, saw that on Al Jazeera this morning. Had watched a deep analysis show a few days earlier but the whole run off thing was hard to follow so I guess stuff can still happen before we know who the president will be...

My wishful thinking ... first round is more of a slap to Macron and the second round might be more of a let's get real now type vote.

This election doesn't change the President does it?

So the explanation was so complicated. This election would get the prime minister picked but would likely NOT be from Macron's Ensemble party which then sets him up to fail... Apparently a lot of alliances are formed at this point...

Any actual French person who wants to dumb it down for me, I am fine with that...

But apparently at this "let's make a deal" stage it's pretty complicated and unpredictable.

FT has good graphic on how many 1st 2nd and 3rd place finishes the major groupings have. A bit daunting how many RN already have in 1st. Reaching an agreement to cooperate will be the first major hurdle, but longer-term, unless they at least appear to deal with the issues voters are concerned about, not sure a cordon sanitaire will hold forever.

Macron is an idiot. No wonder most of his country hates him. Maybe he should go back and live happily ever after with his elderly wife in the countryside rather than destroying the country. He opened up France to nazis with this unnecessary election.

    yeah right nazis …idiotic comparison
Meloni’s experience in Italy proves that once far right is in power they end up doing the same as other parties which is…not much

But with Trump that is NOT the case. He put supreme court justices in place that have terrible effects on the daily lives of average, poor people, especially women forced through medical nightmares. It can have severe consequences.

With Brexit, a bit more minor, but those I know are having to tip toe around new visa restrictions for EU family. It's not fun.
