Recalled France had something like that about 20+ years ago. The reason was more workers will be needed because of the shorter week.

I think two day weekends are perfect.

I don't know about Japan but in a lot of Asian places I've been, if you gave them a four day week they'd be taking up a second full time job. America the same.

Only Europe seems to have that concept that the weekend is leisure time to relax and enjoy.

what's wrong with a second job though?
it's double win; the employee gets double pay, other companies get more manpower

Seems it is mainly for government workers - not necessarily what Darwin would want.

That's right. But it's not the hours they do work. It's the amount of hours they are at work because the boss (God) takes great pleasure in staff being miserable at work doing nothing, even sleeping. Demented work culture.

Agreed. The 'boss' rarely being the business owner either but just some team lead who is equally miserable but his 'boss' might want this too. The fish is stinking from it's head.
