Does this only apply to the British Empire? Can we do a roll call of other countries that need to pay up?
I am all for acknowledging past atrocities, and the British were responsible for more than most, but this to me goes into ridiculous territory.
There is no practical way that misdeeds done by others in the past will be satisfactorily addressed.
I don't think the countries calling for compensation are hardly doing it for pure motives making them hypocritical. They are just trying to shake down the UK for some cash. If they gave that money directly to the descendants of those slaves it might prove better motives but I doubt they'd do that.
One argument I heard for not giving compensation was that, countries will often engage in questionable acts to advance their interests. It makes no sense to give compensation after the fact. It does feel this means the strong win over the weak, but it is what it is.
It wouldn't be practical to address all injustices. Otherwise America would have to be dissolved and all lands returned to the Native Americans. China would have to return the six kingdoms the First Emperor conquered. The Roman Empire would have to and so on, you get the idea.
This money is badly needed as many parts of India haven't seen a mop or had a lick of paint since the British left.
Surely Britain gets to deduct the value of all the development they have brought from the reparations? The original inhabitants of America, the Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia got literally lifted out of the stone age by colonization. None of these countries would be what they are today without colonization, but they would be the same had the original inhabitants not been there.
Don't get me started on reparations. What have the Romans ever done for us?
