Burke, 76, is another unwavering conservative, who believes strongly in the traditions of Latin Mass.

Hailing from Wisconsin, USA, Burke doesn't believe that people who have divorced and remarried should be allowed to receive Holy Communion.

He also branded as "objectionable" the Church's reformed approach to gay people, civil marriages and contraception.

    The line up is interesting.

Hoping it's the EU or Asia in the finals.

There's another "pope watch" thread I started during his illness since, let's face it, he was close to the end then (just made it a couple extra months). Because, yeah, the bookies are hard at work.

However, Trump has managed to make Americans even MORE unpopular than we already were so Burke has no chance I think.

Seriously, Conclave is basically what happened during JP II's election and it's very, very easy for two polarizing frontrunners to be unable to get enough votes and have a rando like a Polish cardinal get voted in. So I would be looking at some moderates.

Also, the old old Italian cardinals have aged out and can't vote anymore, meaning the composition of the voting blocs has changed.

And yet, nothing like the sheer numbers of Italian cardinals...they haven't all aged out yet.

Huge European bloc says, nope, it's not an American. And, weirdly, the American Catholic church can be more conservative than most others...

I vote for this opium addict, killed in the Boxer Rebellion (martyrdom, good first step on the road to sainthood) Pope TianXiang 天祥

The Philippine cardinal, Tagle, you would think would have overwhelming support here but unfortunately the Catholic Church is highly political with a Liberal Party, Communist Party, Catholic Church alliance. Given the first two are very unpopular there is quite a lot of hatred towards Tagle.

Don't think domestic politics will have much say on the conclave though.
