Kind of a Liz Truss moment.

I am very glad that he did appear on Easter, as he was determined to do.

Pretty sure he knew he was taking big, big risks with his health. However, you reach the point, as did John-Paul II, that you are ready to go. Also less complicated than stepping down and being, awkwardly, "Pope Emeritus."

However, he didn't want to be at the helm in such a weakened state.

The jostling for front-runners that began during his illness will now reach fever pitch.

Let the intrigue begin.

Time to watch "Conclave" if you haven't already...it's shows very much how a dark horse compromise candidate (e.g., John Paul II) gets elected.
